Santa Cruz Launches Slow Streets Program
Update 9/25/20: The news gets better! Not only are Slow Streets being set up within the city of Santa Cruz, but the County recently approved an application process for a county-wide program!
Bike Santa Cruz County (BSCC) is now working with Santa Cruz County and the Santa Cruz Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) to bring Slow Streets to the unincorporated areas throughout the County.
Funding for necessary materials and staffing is being provided by BSCC through a financial grant from the RTC.
If you live in an unincorporated area of Santa Cruz County and would like to see your street become a designated Slow Street, check out the process and apply here.
Exciting news! The City of Santa Cruz has recently joined the global Slow Streets movement, launching its own initiative to make our community roadways more accessible and safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people have discovered the many benefits of exercising outdoors. Additionally, many have turned to cycling as alternative transportation. Commuting to work and running errands by bike has really taken hold … a silver lining in an uncertain time, that’s for sure!
The objective of Santa Cruz’s Slow Streets program is “to provide more space for social distancing for those walking and biking outside.” The designated streets will not be completely closed to vehicular traffic, but ample signage will highly discourage through traffic, restricting use of the roads to residents and emergency personnel.
With motor vehicles limited on a number of residential roads, more space will be available for everyone to travel on and enjoy … and much safer space at that.
